In fact, some claim that the area surrounding the Cape Hatteras lighthouse provides the best wave on the entire eastern seaboard! There are multiple lighthouses to explore and admire along the Outer Banks of North Carolina, but among them all, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse stands supreme – both literally and figuratively. The landmark structure welcomes more than 150,000 visitors each year, and holds claim to being the tallest of its kind in North America. It is a genuine OBX icon, located in the heart of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Marine Life Guide In The Outer Banks: Jellyfish

Inhabiting the world’s oceans for millions of years, jellyfish are the oldest multi-organ creatures in existence. Most jellies use a form of jet propulsion to move through seawater, being “guided” by currents, wind and water conditions, as well as a number of other minor factors – sometimes posing a concern to beachgoers when they reach shallow waters or wash ashore. Jellyfish can sometimes be difficult to spot due to their mostly transparent bodies, and tendency to camouflage in the sand. Jellyfish serve as a food source for endangered sea turtles, as well as shelter for smaller fish who hide among their tentacles.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore, located in Nags Head, North Carolina, preserves the portion of the Outer Banks from Bodie Island to Ocracoke Island. The area stretches over 70 miles, is the first national seashore, and is managed by the National Park Service. This section of the beach is the largest, preserved parcels on the Outer Banks. Bringing in thousands of visitors each year, Cape Hatteras offers miles of tranquil yet beautiful beaches to walk on or drive near. We really have it all from crab legs, shrimp, clams, flounder, scallops, and everything in between! Even better – most of it is locally sourced or caught fresh daily in house!
