2027 Beach Nourishment Notice – Kill Devil Hills

A beach nourishment maintenance project is currently planned for Kill Devil Hills in 2027, as part of a joint project with Duck, Southern Shores, and Kitty Hawk. The schedule and contractor have not been finalized. Projects of this kind typically take place between May and September.

During construction, work moves along the beach in short sections. Each active section is closed for safety and reopens once the work there is complete. Nearby beach accesses may be closed temporarily, and equipment and pipelines will be visible on the beach.

Beach nourishment is a government-scheduled public works project outside First Flight Rentals' control. Per the terms of your rental agreement, refunds, discounts, or relocations are not issued for beach nourishment activity or related beach and access closures.

How Beach Closures Work

Block-by-block closure schedules for 2027 haven't been released yet; the project is still in design and permitting. Based on how past Kill Devil Hills projects have run, here's what to expect:

• Rolling closures, not the whole beach. Crews work in sections of roughly 1,000 feet. Only the active section is closed, and the rest of the beach stays open.
• A few days per section. In the last project, each section was typically closed for about 3 to 6 days before work moved down the shoreline.
• Pipes and crossover ramps. Large pipes carry sand along the beach. Crews build sand ramps over them so you can still get to the water outside the work zone.
• Work runs around the clock. Dredging continues 24/7, so closed sections stay closed overnight. You may notice work lights on the beach after dark.
• Some beach accesses may close temporarily. During the 2022 project, the 5th Street Beach Access served as the equipment staging area and was closed for the duration.

Where? The Town hasn't announced the 2027 project area yet. For reference, the 2022 project covered about 2.6 miles of shoreline, from the Kitty Hawk town line south to just north of Prospect Avenue. We'll update this post once the 2027 area is confirmed.
